Is there anybody on my flist (both flists) who'd be able to give me advice about life in Britain in the beginning of WWII? I'm planning a story, and though I've read lots of stuff on that era, not everything is clear to me.

We had a talk recently which brought a question; now, I am not qualified to answer it, but maybe my flist can help me.

Whom do USAians consider to be great USA writers of the second half of the 20th century?

Are Google mail and Google docs having trouble, or is it just me?

I wonder why mysteries work so well as a way to see into some sphere unknown for us: mysteries about sudoku enthusiasts, funeral homes, cooks etc etc. My other favourite genre, fantasy, can kind of do it too - something like G.G. ... I lost a Christmas poem and I can't Google it out since I can't remember any quotes from it. It was written from a POV of a maid in the Betlehem inn, and it may have been by Dorothy Parker, but I am not sure. Please help?

The weather is killing me. Also, I think I forgot how to write. I keep joining ficatons because at least the I write out of a sense of duty.

... for those who read HP7 already and have children: would you allow your child to read it?

(I'm still being surprised by Russian fandom reaction and this is one of the points most often mentioned by the critics - that it is too bloody to give to a child)

After reading various opinions on Mel Gibson's Apocalypto I doubt I'll go see that, but I'd still like to know just how historically accurate that is. I do not trust Gibson much after what I read about Passions - and even Braveheart. Does any of you know of an article analyzing Apocalypto from that direction, or any relevant information?
